About the Role
The Internal Affairs Lieutenant serves in a critical leadership and
accountability role within the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority. This
position investigates complaints received from inmates, employees, and
the public, as well as other incidents assigned by the Administrator or
designee.
The Internal Affairs Lieutenant is responsible for conducting fair,
impartial, and thorough investigations that determine the facts, protect
the integrity of the organization, ensure policy compliance, reduce
operational risk, safeguard staff and inmates, and support continuous
improvement across the Authority.
Duties include investigating allegations of staff misconduct, inmate
complaints, PREA-related matters, use-of-force incidents, policy
violations, contraband, security failures, staff/inmate interactions,
deaths in custody, serious injuries, and other critical incidents. The
position conducts interviews, reviews video and documentation,
preserves evidence, analyzes policy and operational issues, and prepares
clear, accurate, and defensible investigative reports.
The position coordinates with command staff, administrators, legal
counsel, law enforcement, medical staff, human resources, and outside
agencies when necessary. The Internal Affairs Lieutenant also assists
with training, policy review, daily operations, administrative
requirements, and other facility leadership needs.
Requirements
Must be 18 years of age or older, high school graduate or equivalent,
and have a minimum of 5 years’ investigative experience. A background
in corrections is preferred but not required. Specialized training, law
enforcement experience, corrections experience, investigative
experience, leadership experience, or advanced education may substitute
for partial investigative experience. Strong written communication,
sound judgment, confidentiality, and the ability to remain neutral and
fact-driven are required.
